Rate of Perceived Exertion (Subjective Intensity Calibration)
Gunnar Borg's validated scale quantifying exercise intensity through subjective experience rather than objective metrics. RPE captures what heart rate monitoring misses: the integration of muscular fatigue, cardiovascular strain, breathing difficulty, mental fatigue, and motivation. An athlete reporting higher RPE at the same heart rate on Wednesday versus Monday signals recovery state that objective monitoring alone misses. Elite coaches use RPE as an early warning for overtraining, illness, and psychological burnout.
When to use it
When managing training load or work intensity holistically. When detecting early signs of overtraining or burnout before performance metrics decline. When developing internal awareness of effort and sustainability. When objective difficulty is similar but subjective difficulty varies.
How it can help
RPE models calibrating subjective experience against objective metrics in any domain. If the same meeting feels much harder one week than the next despite identical content, that is a signal about your state that productivity metrics miss. Asking teams to rate sprint difficulty provides genuine sustainability information that velocity metrics cannot. Regular RPE rating develops more accurate internal calibration over time.
