Ecosystem

An ecosystem comprises organisms and their physical environment considered through their interactions and exchanges. Energy flows and matter cycles within and across chosen boundaries. A system can be open to external inputs and losses; not every component affects every other component equally.

An ecosystem includes organisms and their physical surroundings, making exchanges and interactions part of the object being studied. The boundary is chosen for a question; material and energy can cross it. A map that includes only the most visible organisms can miss water, nutrients, habitat conditions, or external inputs needed to explain their behavior.

For an organizational analogy, map the specific flows that support an outcome: information, payments, materials, permissions, and work. Different participants may want different things, so ecosystem health is not a self-explanatory objective. State whose outcome matters and what the map leaves outside. The map should help inspect a decision, not become an obligation to trace every possible connection before acting.

When to use it

When understanding system behavior requires seeing interconnections rather than individual components; when keystone elements need identification for protection or leverage; when cascading effects of interventions need tracing; when system resilience depends on diversity and redundancy.

How it can help

Map the relationships and outside conditions relevant to a concrete decision. Trace plausible indirect effects, identify the outcomes being valued, and check the map against observations. Diversity and redundancy may help particular functions but are not universal guarantees of resilience.
