Competition Simulation Training (Rehearsing Under Real Conditions)
Deliberate practice under conditions replicating competitive stressors. Skills reliable in practice often degrade under pressure ('choking'). Simulation progressively introduces competition-specific stressors: time pressure, audience, consequences, unfamiliar environments, fatigue, adversarial conditions. The U.S. military's JRTC, NTC, and Top Gun create conditions so realistic participants experience genuine stress responses building adaptive capacity. Key design: progressive fidelity—start with low-pressure simulations, gradually increase realism as coping capacity develops.
When to use it
When preparing for high-stakes performance where pressure will be present. When someone performs well in practice but underperforms in real situations. When designing training for high-pressure roles. When building team stress resilience.
How it can help
Skills under stress use different neural pathways than relaxed skills. Only stress-condition practice builds implicit pathways functioning under pressure. Practicing a presentation in your office differs fundamentally from practicing in a realistic venue with tough questions under time pressure. Mock interviews, simulated pitches, and tabletop exercises are all applications. Progressive fidelity prevents throwing people into full-pressure situations before they are ready.
