Crop Rotation Logic

Crop rotation—growing different crops sequentially on the same land—is among the oldest validated agricultural knowledge systems. Legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic bacteria, reducing fertilizer needs for the following heavy-feeding crop like corn. Root crops break up compacted soil. Cereals add organic matter through stubble. Disease cycles are disrupted because most pathogens are crop-specific: planting wheat after wheat lets wheat rust build; a non-host crop starves the pathogen. The Norfolk four-course rotation (wheat, turnips, barley, clover) doubled yields and eliminated fallow years, helping trigger the Agricultural Revolution. Modern rotations add cover crops and integrate livestock grazing on residues.

When a system shows declining returns from repeated identical inputs. When you need to manage pest, disease, or depletion cycles through designed alternation. When planning sequential activities that should complement rather than deplete each other over multiple cycles.
