Soil Food Web Model

The Soil Food Web model, developed by Elaine Ingham, reconceptualizes soil not as inert substrate to be fertilized but as a living ecosystem—billions of organisms per teaspoon including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and earthworms that cycle nutrients, suppress disease, and build structure. Plants actively manage their root-zone microbiome, exuding specific sugars to attract beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, which solubilize minerals and deliver them to roots. Fungal-dominated soils favor perennials and forests; bacterial-dominated soils favor annuals. Chemical fertilizers disrupt this web, creating input dependency. The model shifts the farmer's role from feeding the plant to feeding the soil ecosystem that feeds the plant.

When to use it

When a system has become dependent on ever-increasing external inputs to maintain performance. When you suspect that direct intervention is degrading the natural support systems that underlie productivity. When transitioning from a mechanistic management approach to an ecological one.

How it can help

This model demonstrates that the most productive systems work through managed ecosystems rather than direct input-output processes. Applied to organizations, it suggests that leaders should cultivate the conditions for productive work (the 'soil ecosystem') rather than directly managing every output. Applied to health, it parallels the microbiome revolution in medicine. The key insight is that biological systems are not machines to be operated but ecosystems to be cultivated—a fundamentally different management paradigm that applies to agriculture, organizations, communities, and personal health.
