Grain Direction Awareness
Every woodworker learns that wood is not isotropic—its properties differ dramatically by grain direction. Planing with the grain produces smooth surfaces; against it creates tearout. Splitting along the grain is easy; across it, nearly impossible. Wood is strongest along the grain and weakest across it—critical for structural applications. Grain direction determines how wood moves with humidity: boards expand across width, not length, requiring breadboard ends or expansion slots. Master craftspeople develop intuitive grain-reading through surface patterns and fingernail tests. The deeper principle: natural materials have inherent directionality that must be understood and worked with. Fighting the grain wastes energy, damages tools, and produces inferior results.
