In construction, finish work—final visible surfaces—operates under different standards than rough work. A framing carpenter works to plus-or-minus 1/8 inch; a finish carpenter to plus-or-minus 1/64 inch. A rough plumber joins hidden pipes; a finish plumber installs visible fixtures requiring perfect alignment. The distinction encodes a deep principle: appropriate precision depends on observation context. Master craftspeople modulate precision investment—fast and rough where hidden, slow and precise where visible. This isn't cutting corners; it's intelligent allocation of finite attention. The best finish work achieves invisible joinery: a perfect miter, a flush cabinet door, a paint line appearing as natural edge rather than boundary.

When defining quality standards that should vary by context rather than applying uniform precision.
