Triangulation in Relationships
The failure pattern where two-person conflicts are managed by involving a third party, which reduces immediate tension but prevents resolution and corrupts three relationships simultaneously. The mechanism: (1) Person A has a conflict with Person B, (2) instead of addressing B directly, A discusses the conflict with Person C, (3) C is put in an impossible position (ally, mediator, or spy), (4) B discovers the triangulation and feels betrayed by both A and C, (5) new triangles form as B recruits Person D. In families, triangulation is often intergenerational: a parent recruits a child as ally against the other parent, damaging the child's relationship with both parents and their model for conflict resolution. In organizations, triangulation manifests as gossip, political alliance-building, and 'managing through' intermediaries rather than having direct conversations. Murray Bowen identified triangulation as the fundamental building block of relationship dysfunction—the default human strategy for managing anxiety in dyads.
When to use it
When you notice yourself discussing someone's behavior with a third party instead of with them. When you're being recruited as an ally in someone else's conflict. When organizational gossip is rampant. When family conflicts involve third-party alliances.
How it can help
Provides specific protocols for de-triangulating. When someone tries to triangle you in: (1) say 'Have you told [the other person] this directly?' (2) refuse to carry messages or take sides, (3) redirect the person to address their conflict directly. When you catch yourself triangulating: (1) notice that you're about to talk to C about B, (2) ask yourself what you're avoiding by not going to B directly, (3) address the discomfort of direct conversation rather than the ease of triangulation. For organizational leaders: create norms that complaints about someone must go to that someone first, with the complainer's name attached. Anonymous complaint systems institutionalize triangulation.
