Biological mutation can generate variation on which selection acts, but evolution also draws on existing variation and other processes. Deliberate experiments and accidental errors are different in human work. A useful practical analogy is to permit bounded exploration while maintaining reliable execution and learning from actual mistakes.
New variants and execution errors are not the same thing. A deliberately different design can be tested without someone making a mistake, while an accidental failure can reveal useful information if it is investigated. Biological mutation supplies variation, but selection can also act on variation that already exists. Evolution does not require a fresh copying error in every generation.
The practical lesson is to protect both exploration and reliability. State which uncertainty a trial addresses, what variation is allowed, and what must remain dependable. Preserve unexpected outcomes and correct mistakes without celebrating harm. A failed trial is informative only when its result changes what can reasonably be believed or done.
