Reflexivity

In Soros's account, participants' beliefs can influence actions that change the conditions those beliefs describe, creating feedback between perception and the situation. Funding, participation, and withdrawal are possible channels. The strength and direction of the loop depend on actual behavior and constraints.

A reflexive account needs a complete causal loop: belief changes action, action changes the situation, and the changed situation becomes new evidence for belief. Mere enthusiasm or a correlation between opinions and prices is insufficient. Identify the channel, such as funding, customer adoption, participation, or withdrawal, through which perception can alter what is being perceived.

The loop may reinforce itself, weaken itself, or meet a constraint. Additional funding can help a business build, but cannot guarantee a useful product. Expectations can change participation without replacing underlying needs or resources. The practical response is to distinguish observation from consequences partly created by prior expectations and seek an intervention that changes a real link.

When to use it

When market dynamics seem to be self-reinforcing beyond what fundamentals justify; when understanding how beliefs create the realities they describe; when narrative management is a strategic necessity because narratives change outcomes; when traditional equilibrium analysis fails because the system has reflexive feedback.

How it can help

Trace belief, action, changed conditions, and feedback explicitly. Use truthful information and practical interventions to test the mechanism rather than treating narrative control as a substitute for value.
