Overchoice Paralysis (Schwartz)
Barry Schwartz's 'Paradox of Choice' applied as a failure pattern: as the number of options increases, decision quality and satisfaction both decrease. The mechanism involves multiple psychological processes working in concert: (1) evaluation cost—comparing 30 options requires exponentially more cognitive effort than comparing 5, (2) opportunity cost salience—with more options, the 'road not taken' regret intensifies, (3) escalated expectations—more options create the belief that the 'perfect' choice exists, raising the bar for satisfaction, (4) self-blame—with many options, a bad outcome feels like your fault for choosing poorly rather than bad luck. The result: maximizers (people who seek the best option) in high-choice environments are more likely to achieve objectively better outcomes but report less satisfaction than satisficers (people who choose the first 'good enough' option). Modern choice environments—streaming services with 10,000 titles, dating apps with unlimited profiles, career paths with no default—create chronic overchoice that manifests as decision paralysis, perpetual option-scanning, and inability to commit.

When browsing options has replaced choosing. When you feel less satisfied despite having more options. When commitment feels impossible because something better might exist. When designing choice environments for others (products, services, menus).

Provides specific choice architecture interventions for individuals and organizations. For individuals: (1) adopt satisficing as a deliberate strategy for most decisions—define 'good enough' criteria in advance and take the first option that meets them, (2) limit options artificially: consider only 3 options rather than 30, (3) make decisions irreversible when possible—Schwartz's research shows that reversible decisions produce less satisfaction because you keep reconsidering. For organizations designing for others: (1) curate rather than maximize options, (2) provide defaults, (3) organize choices into categories to reduce cognitive load. The radical intervention: for low-stakes decisions, delegate to randomness (flip a coin) and notice how little it matters.
