Complexity Catastrophe (Kauffman)

Stuart Kauffman's concept from evolutionary biology applied to organizational and technical systems: beyond a critical threshold of interconnection and interdependency, adding more components or connections decreases rather than increases system fitness. In Kauffman's NK models, when each component depends on too many other components (high K), the fitness landscape becomes so rugged that the system gets trapped in local optima and cannot improve through incremental change. The organizational translation: when everything depends on everything else, changing anything requires changing everything, so nothing changes. The pattern: (1) a system grows by adding components and connections, (2) each addition makes sense locally (new feature, new integration, new dependency), (3) beyond the complexity threshold, the system's ability to adapt drops precipitously, (4) attempted improvements create as many problems as they solve, (5) the system enters a state where no incremental change improves it but radical simplification is too risky. Legacy enterprise software, government bureaucracies, and highly matrixed organizations often exhibit complexity catastrophe.

When system improvements consistently create new problems. When no incremental change seems to help. When the system feels 'stuck' despite talented people working on it. When evaluating legacy system modernization.

Provides a specific diagnostic: when attempted improvements consistently create as many new problems as they solve, you may have crossed the complexity threshold. Interventions: (1) modularize—reduce the number of dependencies between components so changes can be localized, (2) periodically prune connections: 'Which integrations and dependencies can we remove?' (3) set complexity budgets: 'How many dependencies can this component have before it needs to be split?' (4) track the 'problem creation rate' of changes—if improvements are generating more issues than they resolve, the system is too complex. The radical intervention: sometimes the only path forward is to build a new, simpler system alongside the complex one and gradually migrate.
