Difficult Conversation Framework (Stone/Patton/Heen)

A three-conversation protocol from the Harvard Negotiation Project for handling high-stakes interpersonal discussions. Step 1: Shift from the 'What Happened' conversation (who's right) to the 'Third Story' — describe the gap between perspectives neutrally ('We see this differently'). Step 2: Explore the 'Feelings Conversation' — name emotions without blame ('I felt sidelined' vs 'You ignored me'). Step 3: Address the 'Identity Conversation' — acknowledge what's at stake for each person's self-image (competence, goodness, worthiness of love). The protocol: (a) prepare by mapping all three conversations privately, (b) open from the Third Story, (c) listen to understand their story first, (d) share your story as your perspective not truth, (e) problem-solve together. The key insight is that difficult conversations are never about facts alone — they're always also about feelings and identity.

When to use it

Before any conversation where you feel anxiety, dread, or the urge to avoid. Performance issues, relationship conflicts, boundary violations, disagreements with authority, delivering unwelcome news, addressing patterns of behavior, and any situation where you've been rehearsing what to say in your head.

How it can help

Transforms dreaded confrontations into productive dialogues by giving you a concrete preparation and execution framework. Most people either avoid difficult conversations entirely (letting resentment build) or charge in with accusations (triggering defensiveness). This protocol provides a third path: structured honesty that maintains the relationship. Immediately actionable — you can prepare for a conversation tonight using the three-conversation mapping exercise. Particularly powerful because it addresses the emotional and identity dimensions that purely rational approaches ignore.
