Radical Candor Feedback Protocol (Kim Scott)
A feedback delivery protocol built on two simultaneous requirements: Care Personally AND Challenge Directly. The protocol maps behavior onto a 2x2 grid. High care + high challenge = Radical Candor (the goal). High challenge + low care = Obnoxious Aggression ('You're terrible at this'). High care + low challenge = Ruinous Empathy ('It's fine, don't worry' when it's not). Low care + low challenge = Manipulative Insincerity (talking behind someone's back). The delivery steps: (1) Ask permission ('Can I share something?'), (2) State the observation humbly ('I noticed...'), (3) Explain why it matters ('This matters because...'), (4) Offer to help ('How can I support you?'). Give feedback within 2-3 minutes of observing the behavior. Give praise in public, criticism in private. Focus on the work, not the person's character.
When to use it
When you need to establish a feedback culture on a team or in a relationship. When you catch yourself softening feedback to the point of uselessness. When you notice you're talking about someone's performance to others instead of to them. When preparing for regular one-on-ones or performance conversations.
How it can help
Solves the most common feedback failure mode: Ruinous Empathy — caring so much about someone's feelings that you withhold the honest feedback they need to grow. Provides a memorable framework (the 2x2) that helps you self-diagnose which quadrant you default to, then gives concrete steps to move toward Radical Candor. Immediately changes the quality of workplace relationships because people stop accumulating unspoken frustrations.
