Giving Recognition Protocol (Effective Praise Framework)

A protocol for delivering recognition that actually motivates and reinforces desired behavior, based on self-determination theory and reinforcement research. The five elements: (1) Timely: Deliver within 24-48 hours of the behavior. Recognition delayed is recognition diluted. (2) Specific: Name the exact action ('The way you restructured the client presentation to lead with their pain points...') not a vague trait ('Great job'). (3) Impact-linked: Explain the concrete effect ('...resulted in the client extending their contract for two more years'). (4) Effort-focused: Acknowledge the effort and choices made, not just the outcome ('I know you spent the weekend reworking this'). (5) Authentic: Only recognize what you genuinely admire. Fake praise erodes trust faster than no praise. Delivery choices: public recognition for visible achievements, private recognition for personal growth or effort that others might not see.

When to use it

When someone delivers excellent work. When someone takes a risk that should be encouraged. When you notice effort that others might not see. When you want to shape team culture toward specific behaviors. When morale is low and you need to rebuild engagement.

How it can help

Most recognition fails because it's generic ('Great job, team!'), delayed (annual award ceremonies), or focuses on outcomes instead of replicable behaviors. This protocol ensures every piece of recognition actually reinforces the behavior you want to see repeated. Solves the recognition gap — research shows 65% of employees report receiving no recognition in the past year. Immediately actionable: recognize one person today using all five elements.
