Regret Minimization Framework Protocol (Bezos)
A single-question decision protocol designed for major life decisions, attributed to Jeff Bezos when deciding to leave a Wall Street career to start Amazon. The protocol: (1) Project yourself to age 80. (2) Ask: 'Looking back on my life from age 80, will I regret NOT having done this?' (3) If the answer is clearly yes — act on it, regardless of short-term risk. (4) If the answer is clearly no — don't do it, regardless of short-term appeal. (5) If the answer is ambiguous — the decision probably isn't as consequential as it feels; either path is acceptable. Key insight: Bezos noted that we almost always regret the things we DIDN'T do more than the things we did. Errors of omission haunt us; errors of commission are rationalized and absorbed. The framework biases toward action on meaningful opportunities because inaction is the more dangerous default.
When to use it
Big, scary, meaningful decisions where you already know the right answer but fear is holding you back. Starting a company, making a career change, traveling, pursuing a dream, having a difficult conversation, ending something that's not working. NOT for everyday decisions or decisions that require analytical precision.
How it can help
Cuts through analysis paralysis on major life decisions in under five minutes. The age-80 perspective instantly dissolves the short-term fears (What if I fail? What will people think?) that prevent meaningful action. Particularly powerful for decisions where the fear of failure is the primary obstacle. Has been used by thousands of entrepreneurs and career changers as the final tiebreaker when pros/cons lists reach a stalemate.
