Late-Night FM DJ Voice Protocol
A vocal technique protocol from Chris Voss for controlling the emotional tone of negotiations through deliberate voice modulation. The three negotiation voices: (1) The Late-Night FM DJ Voice (default): Speak slowly, with a downward inflection, in a deep, calm, soothing tone — like a late-night radio host. This voice signals confidence and calm authority. It literally activates the other person's parasympathetic nervous system, reducing their stress response. Use this as your default voice in any negotiation. (2) The Positive/Playful Voice: Light, encouraging tone with a smile behind it. Use for building rapport and making the other party feel comfortable. This should be your most frequent voice — 80% of the time. (3) The Direct/Assertive Voice: Used rarely and only for genuine boundaries. Declarative, matter-of-fact, no rising inflection. 'This point is non-negotiable.' The protocol: Before any negotiation, practice your DJ voice for two minutes. Record yourself. Consciously slow your speaking pace by 30%. When tension rises, shift to the DJ voice — it's almost impossible for the other party to stay agitated when your voice is deeply calm.
When to use it
Every negotiation, with conscious voice selection. Use the playful voice for rapport-building and information-gathering. Switch to the DJ voice when tensions rise, when delivering difficult messages, or when you need to project calm authority. Reserve the assertive voice for genuine deal-breakers. Also useful in any high-stakes conversation: difficult feedback, crisis communication, de-escalation.
How it can help
Addresses the most overlooked variable in negotiation: vocal tone. Research shows that tone of voice accounts for 38% of communication impact (Mehrabian), yet most negotiation training focuses entirely on words and strategy. The DJ voice is immediately deployable — practice it before your next phone call and observe the difference. Particularly powerful in phone negotiations where vocal tone is the primary communication channel.
