Evolution by Natural Selection

Natural selection occurs when heritable variation is associated with differences in reproductive success under particular conditions. Over generations, variant frequencies can change. The process has no foresight and does not necessarily produce global optimality or moral progress. Other evolutionary processes, including mutation and drift, also matter.

Natural selection changes the representation of heritable variants when they differ in reproductive success in a particular environment. The outcome concerns populations over generations, not organisms deciding to acquire a needed trait. Fitness is relative to conditions and to other variants; it is not a general ranking of strength, worth, or progress.

A nonbiological analogy needs identifiable variation, a differential continuation or copying process, and some persistence of the relevant differences. Simply changing a product is not enough. Ask what is selected for: an idea may spread because it is memorable rather than accurate. Establishing a selection process therefore does not establish that its outputs serve the user's purpose.

When to use it

When complex adaptation needs explanation without invoking conscious design; when business or organizational strategy could benefit from evolutionary logic; when understanding why some practices persist (they were selected for) and others disappear; when the most powerful explanatory framework would illuminate a complex phenomenon.

How it can help

When applying an analogy, identify the variants, the continuation or reproduction process, and the persistence of relevant differences. Check what the process favors and whether that matches the intended objective. Deliberate product changes are not automatically biological evolution.
