Values Alignment Check-In Protocol

A periodic self-assessment protocol for measuring the gap between your stated values and your actual behavior, then making concrete adjustments. Step 1 — Identify your top 5 values: Use a values card sort or list exercise to identify what matters most (e.g., family, creativity, health, integrity, adventure). Rank-order them. Step 2 — Audit your time: Review the past month. How many hours did you spend on activities that directly serve each value? Create a simple pie chart: Values 1-5 and 'Other.' Step 3 — Identify the gap: Compare your values ranking with your time allocation. The larger the gap, the more misalignment. If 'family' is your #1 value but you spent 60+ hours working and 5 hours with family last week, there's a gap. Step 4 — Choose one value to realign this month: What specific action would bring your behavior closer to this value? Make it concrete and scheduled. Step 5 — Set a monthly check-in: Re-audit time allocation against values. The protocol works because values drift slowly — you don't notice the misalignment until you measure it.

When to use it

Quarterly as a minimum. After major life transitions (new job, new relationship, major loss). When you feel a vague sense of 'something is off' but can't identify what. When making major decisions about career, relationships, or lifestyle. When burnout is approaching — burnout is often a symptom of values misalignment, not overwork per se.

How it can help

Addresses the most common source of existential dissatisfaction: the slow, invisible drift between what you say matters and how you actually spend your time. Most people can name their values but have never measured whether their lives reflect them. The values-time comparison is often shocking and immediately motivating. The monthly cadence prevents the drift from accumulating. This is one of the highest-leverage self-regulation practices available because it operates at the level of life direction, not daily tasks.
