Repair Attempt Script (Gottman Method)

A protocol for de-escalating conflicts in real-time using 'repair attempts' — any statement or action that prevents negativity from spiraling out of control. Based on John Gottman's finding that the #1 predictor of relationship success is not the absence of conflict but the success rate of repair attempts during conflict. The repair scripts, organized by function: (a) Slow down: 'I need to calm down.' 'Can we take a break and come back to this in 20 minutes?' (b) Acknowledge: 'You have a point.' 'I can see my part in this.' (c) Soften: 'I'm sorry. Please forgive me.' 'That came out wrong. Let me try again.' (d) Inject humor (when appropriate): An inside joke, a funny face, or a deliberate absurdity that breaks the tension. (e) Use a shared code word: Pre-agree on a word or signal that means 'We're spiraling — let's reset.' The protocol: (1) Memorize 3-5 repair phrases. (2) When you notice escalation — raised voices, defensive posture, contemptuous tone — deploy a repair attempt immediately. (3) If your partner makes a repair attempt, ACCEPT IT. This is the critical half: making repairs is important, but accepting them is essential.

When to use it

During any escalating conflict. When you notice the conversation has shifted from the issue to personal attacks. When physical signs of flooding appear (racing heart, clenched jaw, tight chest). When the same argument is cycling without resolution. As a preventive practice: regularly use light repair attempts even in mild disagreements to keep the skill sharp.

How it can help

Directly addresses the mechanism that determines whether conflicts destroy or strengthen relationships. Gottman's research shows that 'master' couples (high satisfaction for 20+ years) don't fight less than 'disaster' couples — they repair more successfully. The acceptance instruction is the protocol's deepest insight: most relationships fail not because repair attempts aren't made, but because they're rejected ('Don't try to joke your way out of this!'). Training both partners to make AND accept repairs is the highest-leverage relationship skill.
