Conflict Engagement Rules Protocol
A pre-agreed set of rules for how to fight fairly, established BEFORE conflict arises. The protocol for creating the rules: (1) Both partners, during a calm moment, discuss and agree on a set of conflict rules. (2) Write them down and post them somewhere visible. (3) At the start of any heated discussion, either partner can invoke the rules. Standard rule set (customize to your relationship): (a) No name-calling or character attacks — address behavior, not identity. (b) No bringing up past grievances that have already been resolved. (c) Either partner can call a timeout of 20-60 minutes — the other must honor it. The caller commits to returning and resuming. (d) Stay on one topic — don't kitchen-sink (pile on multiple complaints). (e) No 'You always' or 'You never' — use specific examples. (f) No walking out without a stated return time. (g) No threatening the relationship ('Maybe we should just break up') unless you mean it. (h) After resolution, both partners state what they'll do differently. No lingering punishment.
When to use it
Establish the rules during a calm period — not during or immediately after a fight. Invoke them at the first sign of escalation in any conflict. Review and update them every 6-12 months as your relationship evolves. Particularly important after a fight that went badly — use the aftermath as motivation to establish or revise the rules.
How it can help
Prevents the predictable escalation patterns that turn manageable disagreements into relationship-damaging fights. The rules work because they're agreed upon in advance, during a calm state — they represent your best judgment about how you want to fight, not your worst impulses in the moment. The timeout rule alone prevents the majority of destructive escalations. The 'no kitchen-sinking' rule keeps conflicts resolvable. Couples who establish and honor conflict rules report that fights become shorter, less damaging, and more productive.
