Love Map Update Protocol (Gottman)
A protocol for maintaining deep knowledge of your partner's inner world — their fears, dreams, preferences, stressors, and aspirations — which Gottman calls a 'Love Map.' The protocol: (1) Weekly curiosity practice: Ask one open-ended question per day about your partner's experience, not logistics. Examples: 'What's been on your mind this week that has nothing to do with work or the kids?' 'What are you looking forward to right now?' 'What are you worried about that you haven't told me?' (2) Monthly update: During your weekly check-in, spend 10 minutes on 'What's new in your inner world?' Cover current stresses, evolving dreams, shifting priorities, and new interests. (3) Quarterly deep dive: Share three things: a current dream, a current fear, and something that's changed about you recently. (4) Annual review: 'How have we each changed this year?' People change continuously; love maps that aren't updated become obsolete. The key insight: most couples know less about each other's current inner lives than they did when they were dating — not because they care less, but because they stopped asking.
When to use it
Continuously, as a relationship maintenance practice. Especially important after major life changes (new job, new baby, health crisis, loss) when partners' inner worlds shift rapidly. When conversation has become entirely logistical. When you realize you couldn't accurately answer 'What is my partner most worried about right now?'
How it can help
Prevents the slow-motion alienation that's the leading cause of 'We grew apart' divorces. Gottman's research shows that couples with detailed, current love maps weather stress, conflict, and life transitions far better than those who've stopped updating their knowledge of each other. The daily question practice is low-effort but high-impact — it signals ongoing interest, which is one of the deepest human needs in partnership. Immediately actionable: ask your partner one genuine question about their inner life tonight.
