Financial Check-In Protocol for Couples

A structured monthly conversation protocol for couples to discuss money without triggering the shame, anxiety, and conflict that financial discussions typically provoke. Pre-meeting: Both partners review account balances, spending, and upcoming expenses independently. The agenda: (1) Financial snapshot (5 min): Current balances, net worth change, spending vs budget for the month. Facts only — no judgments yet. (2) Celebrate one financial win (3 min): Something you did well — paid off a debt, stayed under budget, saved consistently. Start with a positive. (3) Address one concern (10 min): Each partner raises ONE financial issue using 'I' statements. 'I'm worried about our emergency fund' not 'You spend too much.' (4) Goal progress (5 min): Review progress toward shared financial goals (emergency fund, vacation, home down payment, retirement). (5) Next month's priorities (5 min): Any unusual expenses coming? Any adjustments needed? (6) Close with alignment: 'Are we on the same page for this month?' Key rules: No ambushing with financial surprises. No shame about past spending. Focus on the future, not the past.

When to use it

Monthly, on a set date. Particularly important before and during major financial transitions: job changes, home purchases, having children, starting a business. When debt is being addressed. When income changes significantly. When you notice tension around money that isn't being discussed openly.

How it can help

Money is the #1 source of conflict in relationships and the #1 topic couples avoid discussing. This avoidance creates a compound problem: hidden spending, misaligned priorities, and escalating resentment that eventually explodes. The protocol transforms money from a taboo topic into a routine maintenance conversation. The 'celebrate a win' step is critical — it prevents financial discussions from being exclusively negative. Monthly cadence prevents small issues from becoming crises.
