Dream Sharing Practice Protocol

A structured protocol for partners to share and support each other's individual dreams and aspirations, based on Gottman's finding that gridlocked conflicts often have unfulfilled dreams at their core. Monthly practice: (1) Each partner takes 15 minutes to share a personal dream — something they want to experience, achieve, or become. This can range from career ambitions to travel desires to personal growth goals. (2) The listener's job is ONLY to understand, not to evaluate, plan, or problem-solve. Ask: 'Tell me more about what that dream means to you.' 'What would achieving that feel like?' 'Where did this dream come from?' (3) After both partners share, discuss: 'How can we support each other's dreams within our shared life?' The key insight: In strong relationships, each partner is an active supporter of the other's individual aspirations. In failing relationships, individual dreams are treated as threats to the partnership. (4) Quarterly: Review progress on each other's dreams. Has anything changed? Is there a way to take one step toward a dream this quarter?

When to use it

Monthly, as a relationship enrichment practice. When a partner seems restless, unfulfilled, or disconnected. When conflicts keep recurring without resolution — explore the dream beneath the conflict. During midlife transitions when identity questions naturally arise. When planning major life decisions that should align with both partners' deeper aspirations.

How it can help

Addresses a counter-intuitive finding from relationship research: couples who support each other's individual dreams have stronger partnerships than couples who sacrifice individual aspirations for the relationship. The protocol provides a formal space for dreams that often get crowded out by logistics, parenting, and daily demands. When gridlocked conflicts are explored through this lens, they often resolve — the conflict wasn't really about the surface issue but about an unfulfilled dream beneath it.
