30-60-90 Day Plan Protocol

A structured onboarding protocol for the first three months in any new role, organized into three phases with specific goals for each. Days 1-30 (LEARN): (1) Map the organizational landscape: key stakeholders, decision-makers, political dynamics, unwritten rules. (2) Meet 1-on-1 with every direct colleague and key partners. Ask: 'What's working? What's not? What would you change?' (3) Understand current processes, metrics, and performance baseline. (4) Identify quick wins — visible, low-risk improvements you can make to build credibility. (5) Deliverable: a written summary of what you've learned, shared with your manager. Days 31-60 (CONTRIBUTE): (6) Execute 2-3 quick wins identified in month one. (7) Begin contributing to ongoing projects with increasing ownership. (8) Deepen relationships with key stakeholders. (9) Start forming your perspective on what needs to change. Days 61-90 (LEAD): (10) Present your assessment and proposed priorities to your manager. (11) Lead at least one meaningful initiative. (12) Establish your working rhythms (meeting cadences, communication patterns). (13) Set 6-month goals collaboratively with your manager.

When to use it

Starting any new role — job change, promotion, lateral move, or leadership transition. When inheriting a new team. When joining a board or advisory role. The plan should be drafted before day one and shared with your manager during the first week for alignment.

How it can help

Prevents the two most common new-hire failure modes: moving too fast (making changes before understanding context) and moving too slow (being invisible for months). The 30-day listening phase builds the political capital and contextual knowledge needed for the 60-90 day action phases. The quick wins strategy is critical — it builds credibility that funds later, bigger changes. This plan can also be used during interviews to demonstrate strategic thinking to prospective employers.
