Annual Career Review Protocol

A comprehensive year-end protocol for evaluating career trajectory, satisfaction, and strategic positioning. Schedule: 2-3 hours during year-end reflection. The review structure: (1) Accomplishments inventory: List every significant achievement, project, and contribution from the past year. Most people forget 60% of their accomplishments within 6 months. (2) Skill evolution: What new skills did you develop? What skills atrophied? Plot yourself on the skill audit from last year. (3) Relationship capital: Who did you strengthen relationships with? Who did you lose touch with? Is your network growing in the directions your career needs? (4) Satisfaction assessment: Rate from 1-10: Learning, Compensation, Impact, Relationships, Work-Life Balance, Meaning. What changed from last year? (5) Market positioning: Is your value in the market increasing, stable, or decreasing? What's happening in your industry that affects this? (6) The Regret Test: 'If nothing changes about my career for the next 3 years, will I be okay with that?' A 'no' answer demands action. (7) Set 2-3 career priorities for the coming year — specific, measurable goals with quarterly milestones.

When to use it

Annually, during a dedicated reflection period. Before performance reviews or salary negotiations (the accomplishments inventory is critical). Before major career decisions. When you feel career stagnation or restlessness.

How it can help

Provides the career equivalent of a financial audit — a systematic, honest assessment of where you stand and where you're heading. Most professionals are reactive about their careers, responding to opportunities that appear rather than strategically pursuing the career they want. The accomplishments inventory alone is immediately valuable — it provides the raw material for performance reviews, resume updates, and salary negotiations. The Regret Test surfaces complacency that gradual adaptation hides.
