Ergonomic Workspace Setup Protocol
A step-by-step protocol for setting up an ergonomic workspace that prevents the musculoskeletal problems caused by prolonged desk work. Monitor positioning: (1) Top of screen at or slightly below eye level. (2) Screen 20-26 inches from eyes (arm's length). (3) Tilt screen slightly upward (10-20 degrees) so you look slightly downward. Chair setup: (4) Feet flat on floor (use a footrest if needed). (5) Thighs parallel to floor. (6) Lumbar support at the small of your back. (7) Armrests at elbow height, shoulders relaxed (not hiked up). Desk and peripherals: (8) Keyboard at elbow height; wrists neutral (not bent up or down). (9) Mouse at the same level as keyboard, within easy reach. (10) Documents between keyboard and monitor (use a document holder). Movement protocol: (11) Every 30 minutes: stand, stretch, and look at something 20+ feet away for 20 seconds (20-20-20 rule for eyes). (12) Every 60 minutes: walk for 2-5 minutes. (13) Alternate between sitting and standing if you have a sit-stand desk (30-60 minutes per position).
When to use it
When setting up a new workspace (home office, new desk, co-working space). When experiencing back pain, neck pain, wrist pain, or eye strain. When transitioning to remote work. At least annually to reassess your setup. After changing chairs, monitors, or desks.
How it can help
Prevents the cumulative damage that sedentary desk work inflicts on the body over years: lower back pain, neck strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, eye strain, and headaches. Most people know their workspace setup is bad but don't know specifically what to fix. This protocol provides exact measurements and positions. The movement protocol is equally important — even a perfectly ergonomic static position causes damage if maintained for hours. The 20-20-20 eye rule alone prevents the eye strain headaches that afflict most screen workers.
