Relationship Crisis Protocol
A protocol for navigating a major relationship crisis — discovery of infidelity, breach of trust, major deception, or a declaration that the relationship is in serious trouble. Phase 1 — Immediate (First 48 hours): (1) Do not make permanent decisions. Don't move out, file for divorce, or burn bridges in the first 48 hours. (2) Secure your physical safety. If there's any threat, leave and call for help. (3) Contain the blast radius: Don't tell 20 people — tell 1-2 trusted confidants. Wide disclosure creates social dynamics that make reconciliation harder even if you want it. (4) Write down what you know factually. Separate facts from assumptions and interpretations. Phase 2 — Stabilization (Week 1-4): (5) Each person sees an individual therapist before attempting couples therapy. You need to understand your own emotional state before trying to understand the relationship. (6) Establish temporary ground rules: Are you staying in the same house? What contact will you have? Are you telling children? What are the boundaries on further disclosure? (7) The person who caused the crisis takes responsibility for transparency — answering questions honestly without demanding that the other person 'get over it.' Phase 3 — Assessment (Month 1-3): (8) Begin couples therapy with a therapist trained in crisis work. (9) Assess: Is genuine accountability present? Is the harmful behavior truly stopped? Is there willingness to do the hard work? (10) Decide: Continue with intensive repair, separate to assess, or end the relationship with dignity.
When to use it
Upon discovery of infidelity, major deception, secret addiction, financial betrayal, or any revelation that fundamentally shakes the foundation of a committed relationship. When a partner announces they want to leave. When a crisis reveals that the relationship is in far worse shape than you realized.
