Neuroception (Unconscious Threat Detection)

Porges's proposed term for nonconscious evaluation of safety and threat cues within polyvagal theory. It should be distinguished from established findings about automatic responses and from a validated measure of actual danger.

Neuroception is Porges's term for a proposed process that evaluates cues of safety and threat outside awareness within polyvagal theory. It is a theoretical construct, not a directly readable detector that certifies whether a person or place is safe. Automatic bodily responses can be real and consequential while their interpretation remains uncertain.

A useful cautious application separates the observation from the explanation. Notice tension, startle, or ease; then consider the environment, prior experience, fatigue, and other possibilities. A response may justify slowing down, seeking information, or changing a condition. It does not establish hidden danger, a specific autonomic circuit, or another person's intentions.

When to use it

When discussing the theory or noticing automatic responses that merit investigation, without treating those responses as diagnostic or infallible.

How it can help

Can prompt attention to bodily experience and environmental context, provided interpretations are tentative and checked against other evidence.
