Polyvagal Theory (Stephen Porges): Three Nervous System States

A theory proposed by Stephen Porges connecting autonomic pathways with defensive and social behavior. Common three-state diagrams simplify the account, whose anatomical and evolutionary claims are contested.

Polyvagal theory proposes links among autonomic pathways, defensive responses, and social behavior. Its familiar three-state diagram is a teaching representation of that account, not a complete anatomical map or a way to diagnose a person by appearance. Autonomic activity involves interacting processes that do not reduce to a universal ladder from calm to mobilization to shutdown.

Separate the theory's claims from the observation you want to explain. Someone who is quiet may be concentrating, tired, distressed, or choosing not to speak; the behavior does not identify dorsal vagal activity. Supportive communication can be evaluated on its own merits while the proposed physiological explanation remains contested.

When to use it

When studying the theory, evaluating claims made in its name, or discussing experiences with someone who finds the vocabulary useful and understands its limits.

How it can help

Can provide a vocabulary to discuss an account of stress and social behavior, provided observable experience is separated from unverified physiological interpretation.
