First Principles Thinking
An approach that separates essential requirements and supported constraints from inherited assumptions, then reasons toward possible solutions from those starting points.
First-principles thinking starts by separating a problem's essential requirements and well-supported constraints from assumptions inherited with an existing solution. It then asks what arrangements could satisfy those requirements. The starting points may be physical relationships, definitions, measured needs, or explicit premises; calling something fundamental does not make it certain.
Reconstruction must include the costs that decomposition can hide. Raw materials are only part of a manufactured product: labor, yield, tooling, testing, logistics, capital, and reliability can be legitimate constraints. Use fundamentals to generate and test alternatives, while retaining relevant experience and analogies as sources of information.
When to use it
When conventional solutions are inadequate and the constraints may be assumed rather than real; when 'that's how it's done' is the primary justification for the current approach; when physical or mathematical fundamentals suggest possibilities that convention doesn't; when innovation requires questioning inherited assumptions.
