Default Status
The option or outcome that applies without an active change. Defaults can influence choices through effort, inertia, inferred recommendation, and other context-dependent mechanisms.
A default is what happens when someone makes no active change. It can influence behavior through convenience, inertia, an inferred recommendation, or other mechanisms. The size and direction of the effect depend on the setting, and a default does not literally control everyone who encounters it.
Identify the no-action path and whether it serves the affected person's interests. A useful default should be visible, understandable, and reasonably easy to change where choice is appropriate. Evaluate both uptake and consequences: a high participation rate alone does not establish that the chosen setting fits users or reflects informed preference.
When to use it
When configuring a product, process, or personal routine, or evaluating whether inactivity has been mistaken for an informed preference.
How it can help
Makes the no-action path visible and supports designing or reviewing settings that fit the affected person's interests.
