Inversion

Approaching a problem through an opposite or failure-oriented formulation to reveal constraints, dependencies, and preventable mistakes.

Inversion examines a goal from the direction of failure or an opposite formulation. Instead of asking only what could produce a desired outcome, identify conditions that would defeat it. The change in question can expose neglected dependencies and preventable errors.

Turn the resulting list into proportionate action. Some failures can be avoided cheaply; others are uncertain, tolerable, or inseparable from the opportunity. Avoiding a set of mistakes is not sufficient to achieve the goal. Combine the inverse view with a positive plan and stop when additional failure scenarios no longer improve the decision.

When to use it

When a plan overlooks failure conditions or when identifying obstacles is easier than specifying every ingredient of success.
