Heredity

Genetic heredity concerns transmission of DNA variants from parents to offspring. Traits can reflect genetic and environmental influences. Organizational customs and personal habits can also be transmitted, but through learning, institutions, incentives, and shared surroundings rather than the same genetic mechanism.

Genetic inheritance concerns information transmitted from parents to offspring. A trait can also depend on environment and development, so resemblance alone does not identify a genetic cause. Learned customs, copied procedures, and inherited property are different transmission processes that should not be collapsed into one biological explanation.

For an organizational or personal analogy, trace the actual carrier of continuity: a document, incentive, training practice, repeated story, or physical constraint. Knowing a practice's origin may explain how it arrived, but current incentives can explain why it remains. Test whether changing the carrier or present conditions changes the practice before calling it an unalterable inheritance.

When to use it

When organizational practices seem disconnected from current needs (they may be inherited from founders); when personal patterns repeat despite not serving you; when understanding why a system works the way it does requires examining its origins; when path dependence is constraining current options.

How it can help

Trace the actual means by which a practice is passed on and the present conditions that maintain it. Examine which parts remain useful and which can be changed. Do not infer a genetic cause from resemblance or a fixed constraint from historical continuity.
