Observer Effect
A change in a phenomenon caused by the process of observing or measuring it. The effect depends on a specific physical, attentional, or incentive mechanism and may be small or absent for a given measure.
Observation can change what is being observed through a specific interaction: a probe alters a sample, a questionnaire directs attention, or an announced metric changes incentives. The useful inquiry identifies that mechanism and its likely size. It should not begin with the universal claim that every measurement necessarily causes an important change.
Keep different phenomena distinct. Quantum uncertainty is not simply a synonym for an observer disturbing an object, and people do not invariably perform better when watched. Design measurement so that its burden, incentives, and context are understood. Privacy and consent remain relevant; covert monitoring is not a default solution to reactivity.
When to use it
When designing measurement, evaluating supported performance, or investigating behavior that changes after monitoring or targets are introduced.

Encourages examining how data collection changes task conditions, incentives, or the measured system and interpreting results accordingly.
