Scientific Method

A family of practices for developing and checking explanations through evidence, explicit reasoning, criticism, and revision. Scientific work is iterative and uses more than one fixed sequence or type of study.

Scientific inquiry develops and checks explanations through observation, comparison, prediction, criticism, and revision. Its strength comes from making claims answerable to evidence and from practices that expose error. There is no single mandatory sequence: experiments, observational studies, models, and historical evidence can play different roles.

For a practical question, specify what you expect to observe, what alternatives could explain the result, and what the method can actually distinguish. A failed prediction may reflect a flawed hypothesis, measure, implementation, or auxiliary assumption. Report what happened and what remains unresolved rather than treating every test as a guaranteed step toward the truth.

When to use it

When an empirical uncertainty matters and a feasible, ethical observation or comparison could inform it.
