Hierarchical Organization

Hierarchical organization arranges components into nested levels. The links may represent containment, authority, dependency, or another specified relation. Simon's analysis explains how relatively stable subassemblies and partly separable interactions can make some complex systems easier to build and understand. It is not a universal proof that management hierarchies are optimal.

A hierarchy can describe containment, responsibility, dependency, or authority. These relationships are not interchangeable. A tissue contains cells; a manager supervises people; a chapter contains sections. Drawing all three as trees does not establish that they behave alike. Name what each parent-child link means before using the structure to make a decision.

Simon's account of complexity emphasizes relatively stable subassemblies and interactions that are stronger within some components than between them. This can make construction and explanation manageable. It is not proof that every organization needs more management layers. When cross-boundary interactions dominate, a neat tree may conceal the coordination that matters most.
