A structured hypothetical scenario used to inspect implications, clarify concepts, or test the consistency of assumptions through reasoning.

A thought experiment constructs a hypothetical situation to inspect the implications of assumptions, concepts, or principles. It can isolate a distinction that is difficult to see in ordinary circumstances and reveal what a theory commits us to. The resulting conclusion remains conditional on the scenario and the reasoning used.

Inspect the design as carefully as the answer. A scenario can smuggle in the very conclusion it appears to establish, rely on impossible background conditions, or trigger an intuition that changes with irrelevant wording. Vary the setup and compare countercases. An imaginative result can guide empirical inquiry but is not an observation of what actually happens.
