Niches

An ecological niche describes relevant environmental conditions, resources, and interactions associated with a species' persistence. Multiple dimensions matter, and potential suitability can differ from realized occupancy. Competitive exclusion is a conditional result, while coexistence can involve several mechanisms.

An ecological niche concerns the conditions and resources under which an organism can persist and its interactions with other organisms. Hutchinson's formulation treats several relevant dimensions together. The conditions a species could tolerate in principle can differ from where it actually persists when competitors and other interactions are present.

For a business analogy, specify a customer's situation, a need, and the conditions under which an offer is useful. A narrow label is not enough: the audience must exist, the need must matter, and the service must remain viable. Competitive exclusion is conditional ecological theory, not proof that two businesses cannot serve similar customers or that every enterprise should specialize narrowly.

When to use it

When competitive strategy needs specificity about where you can win; when the competitive exclusion principle warns against direct competition with a stronger incumbent; when niche differentiation would enable coexistence rather than head-to-head competition; when market entry requires finding an underserved niche.

How it can help

For a business analogy, identify a specific customer situation and need, test the offer against alternatives, and examine whether it can be delivered viably. Specialization may help some strategies but is not mandated by ecology.
