VO2 Max as Longevity Predictor

VO2 max is maximal oxygen uptake during exercise. Cardiorespiratory fitness, measured directly or estimated from performance, is associated with mortality in observational studies. These findings do not establish a universal ranking of predictors or a proportional causal lifespan benefit from every increase.

VO2 max measures the greatest rate of oxygen uptake reached during an appropriate maximal exercise test. It is one indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness, which reflects the integrated performance of several bodily systems. Studies associate higher measured or estimated fitness with lower mortality, but the distinction between direct oxygen measurement, treadmill-derived estimates, and wearable estimates matters when interpreting a number.

A population association is not an individualized promise that increasing a score by a given amount will extend life proportionally. Fitness can be a useful part of prevention and functional planning, alongside symptoms, other health risks, preferences, and capacity for activity. The practical move is to use an appropriate measure consistently and connect change to meaningful function, rather than treating a top percentile or maximal training session as a universal requirement.

When to use it

When evaluating cardiorespiratory fitness, monitoring appropriate training, or discussing prevention and physical function with suitable context.

How it can help

Use suitable fitness information alongside symptoms, function, other risks, and professional advice when appropriate. Testing and exercise intensity should fit the individual; a fixed maximal-effort protocol is not required for everyone.
