Channel Capacity (Bandwidth Limits)

Channel capacity is the maximum reliable information rate for a specified communication-channel model under its constraints. Human and organizational bandwidth is an analogy that requires separate observation, not a directly measured Shannon limit.

Channel capacity is the highest reliable information rate permitted by a specified communication-channel model and its constraints. Shannon's result concerns coding and error probabilities under stated assumptions. It does not supply one universal bandwidth for every person, meeting, or organization, nor does exceeding a limit imply a universal exponential increase in errors.

For technical systems, distinguish raw transmission rate, useful information rate, noise, and the resources available for coding. For human coordination, capacity is an analogy that prompts observation: which messages require attention, what queues form, and where decisions stall? Reducing demand may help, but improving routing, changing the representation, adding suitable resources, or clarifying authority can also matter. The right intervention follows the observed bottleneck.
