Lossy vs Lossless Compression
Lossless compression preserves exact recoverability of its input. Lossy compression permits specified information loss, often to reduce size further. Summaries are selective representations that can be evaluated through a similar fidelity-versus-use tradeoff.
Lossless compression permits exact reconstruction of the encoded input. Lossy compression trades some fidelity for a more compact representation according to a chosen criterion. Whether a loss matters depends on the task: a small image difference may be acceptable for a preview and unacceptable for an archival master or a technical measurement.
In communication, a summary is usually a selective representation rather than a formal codec, but the same question is useful: what must the recipient be able to recover or decide? Keep the original when later uses may need omitted detail, and make consequential omissions or transformations visible. A concise account can serve one decision well while being inadequate for another; completeness and usefulness must be judged against the intended use.
