Replication

Replication produces another instance of a pattern through a specified mechanism. DNA replication is a biological example; copying information or procedures uses different processes and fidelity criteria. Variation can arise during or outside copying. Replication does not explain every kind of persistence or change.

Replication concerns producing another instance of a pattern through a specified process. Ask what is copied and what counts as fidelity: exact bytes, a chemical sequence, a procedure, or a meaning. These are different standards. Two documents can be textually identical while causing different actions in different contexts; two differently worded instructions can preserve the same procedure.

Variation can be introduced separately from copying. There is no general reason to make every copy less accurate in order to encourage adaptation. Preserve what must remain reliable and identify where intentional change is allowed. Also distinguish copying a pattern from independently repeating a scientific study: the latter investigates whether a result recurs rather than merely reproducing the original output.

When to use it

When understanding what persists and what changes requires replication analysis; when replication fidelity needs optimization (too high = no adaptation; too low = no consistency); when business model scalability depends on replication dynamics; when evolutionary thinking requires identifying the replicating unit.

How it can help

Identify the pattern, the copying mechanism, and the differences that matter. Preserve required fidelity, introduce intentional variation separately, and test whether the copy works in its destination context.
