Getting In Sync (Alignment Process)

A process of checking that people understand the relevant goal, reasoning, constraints, and expected actions. It reveals mismatches hidden by vague agreement and can support coordination even when some substantive disagreement remains.

People can use the same words while expecting different actions. Getting in sync makes those interpretations inspectable: each person explains the purpose, constraints, and next step as they understand them, and the others correct mismatches. A useful endpoint is clear coordination, including a record of any disagreement that remains.

Understanding is different from agreement, and agreement is different from consent to an action. A person can understand another view accurately while rejecting its values or proposed tradeoff. Decide what kind of alignment the task actually requires, who has authority to decide, and how unresolved objections will be handled. More discussion is not always the next useful move.

When to use it

When people appear to agree but act differently, a handoff depends on shared assumptions, or recurring disagreement has not been stated precisely.

How it can help

Helps identify exactly where interpretations diverge and choose whether clarification, evidence, negotiation, or a decision rule is needed.
