Communication Overhead
The effort needed to exchange information, align decisions, onboard participants, and coordinate dependent work. A group of n people has n(n−1)/2 possible pairwise links, but actual coordination cost depends on the task and communication structure.
The expression n(n−1)/2 counts distinct pairs among n people when every pair is considered a possible undirected link. It does not count actual messages, meetings, or hours. Some tasks require dense mutual coordination; others can be divided with relatively few dependencies. The work structure determines which potential links matter.
Adding people can increase capacity while also requiring onboarding, decisions, and coordination. Compare those effects for the actual task and time horizon. Shared documentation, clear responsibilities, and suitable interfaces may help, but reducing communication indiscriminately can hide important dependencies. Useful coordination has a benefit as well as a cost.

When a growing group experiences duplicated discussion, unclear handoffs, or a staffing decision whose benefit depends on coordination.
