Forcing Function

A design constraint that prevents a specified action until a necessary condition is met, or prevents an invalid sequence. The term is also used loosely for personal commitments and deadlines, which usually influence behavior without enforcing it.

A forcing function in design makes an action depend on a required condition, preventing a specified invalid sequence. A system might refuse to advance until a necessary input exists. This differs from a reminder, default, or voluntary deadline: those can influence behavior without structurally blocking the action.

The design question is precise: which error should become impossible, under what conditions, and at what cost to legitimate use? Requiring a field to be filled does not make its contents correct. A useful constraint must match the actual failure route and allow appropriate recovery. In personal productivity, the phrase is often used more loosely for commitments; name that weaker mechanism rather than promising that motivation has been engineered away.

When to use it

When a well-understood sequence or missing prerequisite repeatedly causes a problem and a proportionate constraint can be designed and tested.
