Role-Playing Model

A rehearsal technique in which participants enact specified roles to practice an interaction or examine assumptions about it. It can make behavior available for feedback, while remaining a simplified simulation.

Role-playing rehearses an interaction by assigning participants different roles in a specified situation. It can reveal unclear explanations, missing information, and responses a person has not practiced. The role-player follows a representation of another position; they do not become a reliable source of that real person’s private motives.

Choose a specific learning question, enough realism to test it, and a useful debrief. Vary the scenario when a single easy rehearsal would teach only one script. An imagined success is evidence about the rehearsal, not proof of future performance. Role-playing is one option among demonstration, discussion, observation, and practice; the format should serve the learner and the task.

When to use it

When preparing for an unfamiliar interaction, teaching an interpersonal skill, or testing whether an explanation survives plausible questions.
