Standard Operating Procedure

A standard operating procedure documents how a recurring activity should be carried out under specified conditions. Depending on the task, it may need detailed method, prerequisites, responsibilities, checks, records, and instructions for exceptions. An SOP that states only the desired result can leave the very variation it was meant to address unresolved.

Write from a process that has been examined, and test whether an intended user can carry it out. A clear document does not make a flawed method correct. Keep the version, owner, and review path visible so changes in tools or conditions do not leave people following obsolete instructions. Use enough detail for the task without turning every ordinary action into a formal procedure.

When a recurring task needs dependable handoff, consistent execution, traceable checks, or preservation of practical process knowledge.
