The missionary-versus-mercenary contrast is a practitioner metaphor about what directs a venture: an enduring purpose or a primarily transactional opportunity. John Doerr uses the contrast to advocate purpose, customer value, and sustained commitment. That argument is not a finding that leaders or employees divide into two stable types.

Examine concrete tradeoffs instead of testing how passionately someone describes a mission. How does the purpose affect a difficult decision, whose interests are included, and what financial conditions keep the work viable? Mission and compensation can coexist. Thought leadership is a separate question about the quality and influence of someone’s ideas; a declared mission does not establish either expertise or responsible conduct.
