Automation
Automation assigns specified tasks to a system that executes them with reduced direct human intervention. It typically still requires design, monitoring, maintenance, and exception handling. The decision is about which tasks to automate and how people can inspect, correct, or take over the process.
Automating a task changes who does the work and where errors become visible. A recurring rule can execute consistently while consistently using the wrong input or interpreting an exception incorrectly. Describe the trigger, inputs, action, success condition, and exception path before deciding which part should run automatically.
Include the remaining human work in the comparison: checking outputs, handling unusual cases, updating rules, and recovering from failure. A useful system should make its operation inspectable and allow a person to pause or correct it. Saving routine effort is distinct from preserving the skills and understanding needed when the routine breaks.
